Jim Wangers, author of the book Glory Days: When Horsepower and Passion Ruled Detroit, was interviewed for Fox Business News on June 2nd, 2009.

The legendary Pontiac marketing wizard and GTO guru spoke on the recent demise of the Pontiac brand.  "The facts are that after the wonderful glory days of the 1960's and the 1970's, General Motors proceeded to destroy . . . one of the greatest assets they had, which was the images - what it meant when you started to talk about a Chevrolet or a Pontiac or an Oldsmobile or a Buick or even a Cadillac - everybody knew what you were talking about."

As an author, co-author or editor he has some four dozen books to his credit. Needless to say, they are all about cars and the motor industry, Karl's life-long passion.

Jim Wangers, legendary Pontiac ad man and one of the original innovators behind the beloved Pontiac GTO, commented this week on the apparent demise of the eighty-three year old GM brand:

"Pontiac has been mis-managed for the last 35 years with one 'GM Solider' after another assuming the Divisional leadership," Wangers notes. "After an extended era under three great leaders, 'Bunkie' Knudsen, Pete Estes, and John DeLorean who help establish the great 'Wide-Track' image, Pontiac suffered terminally. One General Manager after another could never understand what it meant to be a Pontiac."

"Trying to run the Division like a business they proceeded to lose the youthful, sporty, performance identity falling invisibly into 'just another nice GM car'. Failure was inevitable as one great model name like Bonneville, GTO, Trans-Am, and Grand Prix fell into oblivion."

Wangers concludes, "The great 'Wide-Track' era which took 10 years to build, took 35 years to destroy."

Jim Wangers earned widespread renown for the promotion and marketing behind such Pontiac successes as the GTO, the Can Am and the "Judge" as well as being part of the inspiration for the famed Woodward Cruise held every year in Detroit, MI. Today, Wangers is also known for establishing Automotive Marketing Consultants, Inc. (AMCI), the first company authorized by the FTC to conduct head-to-head automobile comparisons for use in automotive advertising.
